The Lipno Lake Loop is a 48-kilometre circuit around the Lipno Reservoir, the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic. Nestled in the foothills of the Sumava Mountains in South Bohemia, this route follows well-maintained paved cycling paths along the shoreline, passing through Lipno nad Vltavou, Frymburk, and Horni Plana. With gentle gradients and stunning water views, it is one of the most family-friendly cycling routes in the country and ideal for a relaxed full-day outing.

Highlights Along the Trail
Lipno nad Vltavou is the main hub for the loop, with boat rentals, cafes, and easy access to the Lipno Treetop Walkway, a raised path through the canopy with views over the lake and surrounding forest. The route then heads south along the western shore, through pine and mixed woodland typical of the Sumava foothills. Frymburk offers a charming lakeside town centre with churches, guesthouses, and restaurants. Continuing around the reservoir, riders pass Horni Plana and smaller settlements before returning to Lipno nad Vltavou.
The terrain is predominantly flat with only minor inclines, making it suitable for children and less experienced cyclists. Most of the path is separated from motor traffic, and signage is clear. Summer weekends can be busy, so an early start is recommended for a quieter ride. For planning and local information, visit Lipno.info. The nearby Sumava National Park is worth exploring on foot or by bike if you have extra time. Route details and GPX files are available on Komoot and via Czech tourism.
Terrain and Practical Tips
The circuit is almost entirely on dedicated or shared cycling paths with a smooth surface. A standard city bike, hybrid, or children's bike is sufficient. Plan for three to five hours of riding, plus time for the treetop walkway and lakeside stops. Accommodation, restaurants, and shops are available in Lipno nad Vltavou, Frymburk, and Horni Plana. The route is rideable from May through September; shoulder seasons may have cooler weather but fewer crowds.
