Sumava Bohemian Forest Cycling Route

The Sumava National Park cycling route is one of those rides you remember long after you get home. It crosses 68 kilometres of Czechia's largest and wildest national park, passing through ancient spruce forests, past mirror-still glacial lakes, and alongside some of the most dramatic river gorges in Central Europe. If you are comfortable with mixed terrain and moderate climbs, this is the route to choose for a true wilderness cycling experience.

Route Summary

  • Distance: 68 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate-Hard
  • Terrain: Paved roads, gravel paths, forest trails
  • Best season: May to September
  • Elevation gain: Approximately 800 m
  • Start points: Kvilda, Srni, or Lipno nad Vltavou

Route Overview

The route threads through the heart of Sumava National Park, the largest protected area in the Czech Republic and part of the Bohemian Forest massif shared with Germany and Austria. Unlike many Czech cycling paths that stick to asphalt and riverbanks, this one takes you onto forestry roads, gravel tracks, and singletrack sections. Expect steady climbs through forest, rewarding descents, and occasional stretches where you will need to push or carry your bike over roots and stones. The payoff is scenery that feels genuinely remote.

Terrain Description

Surface quality varies considerably. You will ride smooth paved roads through villages and along parts of the Lipno reservoir, then switch to compacted gravel forestry roads that are generally fine for hybrid or mountain bikes. The forest trail segments can be rougher: wet roots, loose stones, and steep pitches are common. A mountain bike or sturdy gravel bike with at least 38 mm tyres is recommended. Road bikes are not suitable for the full route.

Key Highlights

Sumava National Park

The route spends most of its distance inside the national park boundaries. This means minimal development, strict trail use rules, and undisturbed forest. The park protects Europe's largest continuous forest ecosystem outside Scandinavia, and cycling through it feels like a journey into a different century.

Lipno Views

Lipno Reservoir, the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic, appears at various points along the route. The shoreline sections offer open views across the water to the Austrian Alps on clear days. The Lipno Treetop Walkway near Lipno nad Vltavou is worth a stop if you have time for a detour.

Modrava Peat Bogs

Around Modrava, the route skirts high-altitude peat bogs (raseliniste) that have survived since the last ice age. Boardwalk trails allow you to walk into these fragile habitats without damaging them. Sundews, cotton grass, and rare orchids grow in the acidic soil. Cycling through the surrounding forest, you notice how the light changes and the air feels cooler near these wetlands.

Vydra River Gorge

The Vydra (Devil's River) cuts through a steep, forested gorge with boulders and whitewater. The road and path run alongside it for a stretch, and the sound of the river and the sight of the dark water rushing between rocks make this one of the most memorable sections. There is a small parking area and information point if you want to pause and explore on foot.

Wildlife and Nature

Sumava supports healthy populations of red deer, roe deer, and wild boar. Lynx have been reintroduced and patrol the deeper forest, though sightings are rare. Birdwatchers may spot black storks, Tengmalm's owls, three-toed woodpeckers, and capercaillie in old-growth areas. Early morning and late afternoon rides increase your chances of seeing deer near the forest edges. Remember to keep a respectful distance and never feed wildlife.

Practical Tips

Accommodation

The villages of Kvilda, Srni, Modrava, and Lipno nad Vltavou offer guesthouses, pensions, and hotels. Booking ahead is essential in July and August. Camping is restricted within the national park, but designated campsites exist in the buffer zone. Lipno nad Vltavou has the most services and is a good base if you plan to split the route over two days or want to combine cycling with lake activities.
