Moravian Wine Trails Cycling Route

The Moravian Wine Trails cycling route winds for 85 kilometres through the heart of South Moravia, one of the Czech Republic's oldest and most celebrated wine regions. This gently rolling circuit takes riders past centuries-old vineyards, historic towns, family-run wine cellars, and the UNESCO-listed Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape. Whether you ride it in a single day or spread it over two or three with wine tastings along the way, the route offers a perfect blend of cycling and cultural discovery.

Route Summary

  • Distance: 85 km
  • Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
  • Terrain: Paved country roads
  • Best season: May–October
  • Key stops: Mikulov, Valtice–Lednice UNESCO area, Palava hills, Znojmo, family wine cellars

Highlights Along the Trail

Mikulov serves as a natural gateway to the route, with its Renaissance square, Jewish heritage, and hilltop chateau overlooking the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. From here, the trail dips into the rolling vineyards that characterise the region. The landscape shifts between open fields of vines and wooded sections, with plenty of viewpoints along the way. Valtice and Lednice form the centrepiece of the UNESCO site, famous for their Baroque chateaux, ornamental gardens, and romantic structures such as minarets and colonnades scattered across the countryside.

The Palava hills add gentle elevation and scenic variety. These limestone ridges rise above the plains and offer panoramic views across the vineyards. Further south, Znojmo rewards riders with its historic centre, underground passages, and traditional wine cellars carved into the rock. Throughout the route, family-run wine cellars invite cyclists to stop for tastings of local varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Blaufränkisch.

Terrain and Practical Tips

The route follows mostly paved country roads with light traffic. Elevation gain is moderate, with a few short climbs in the Palava area. A hybrid or touring bike is ideal; road bikes work well too. Plan for five to eight hours of riding, depending on stops. Services are available in Mikulov, Valtice, Lednice, and Znojmo.
